I am a Queens College student and besides studying to become an elementary school teacher I also have a co-major in history. I find history to be very interesting. I truly believe it is very important for everyone to understand and know what makes up their own history along with their country's history and even the world. One of the greatest classes I have taken in history was immigration. Even though I was always interested in history I never really enjoyed it all that much. I guess it wasn't until I was assigned to look into my own personal history that I really became interested. History seems to mean more to a person when you are able to relate it to yourself. I hope to pass the same positivity that I now have about history onto my own class one day. This semester I am student teaching at P.S. 193 in Whitestone, Queens. I had my first day today and I’m really excited to start the school year. From as far back as I could remember I always wanted to become a teacher. I always loved tutoring others in school, I guess because I like helping people and I have the patients to do it. I believe my love for children also makes teaching a perfect career for me.
Some previous experiences that I had with children involved babysitting, tutoring, volunteering at a local preschool and now, student teaching. I have been babysitting since I was 13 years old and probably loved every moment of it. Whether it was for my little cousin or children from family friends everyone seem to entrust me when it came to their children. My history in tutoring started in elementary school and has lasted into my college years. Whether it’s my friend or a struggling younger student, I never minded to help. In middle school I was given the opportunity to work in a preschool not too far from my house. After working with the children and teachers I knew teaching was what I wanted to do. Working as a student teacher I really adore the love that the children give you. Even the children you may have thought hated you, really did appreciate everything you had done for them throughout the year. I really believe teaching is one of those professions that always gives back to you.
Some hobbies I really enjoy outside of school would be cooking, exercising, spending time with family and friends and traveling. I only started traveling in the past year and I really am planning to continue over the next couple of years. I hope from my future travels I could incorporate some foreign objects I come across and information I have learned into my own class.
